Please open it for longer during vacation" — Keimyung University successfully concludes ROS-based autonomous driving education

The “ROS (Robot Operating System) Applied Programming Education” held at Keimyung University from June 2 to June 5 successfully concluded. This program was designed to improve students’ understanding of autonomous driving theories and algorithms, enhance their job readiness and competitiveness, and boost the practical skills of participants preparing for autonomous driving competitions.

A Practice-Centered, Robust Curriculum

The training covered the full scope of ROS 2-based autonomous robot development and was structured around hands-on activities. On the first day, participants built their development environments and strengthened their grasp of core ROS concepts such as the Nav2 (navigation stack) overview and the basics of Odometry. This was followed by sessions on SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) and practical work in Path Planning theory and application. Particularly, real-world exercises using the Limo robot significantly contributed to enhancing participants’ practical sense.

On the third and fourth days, the focus shifted to vision-based autonomous driving technologies, including image classification and object detection using YOLO, covering both model training and deployment. These sessions gave participants first-hand experience in how visual data is processed and utilized in autonomous driving systems.

“We want a deeper course next time.” Students’ enthusiastic response

After the course, many participants expressed high satisfaction, with several stating, “The 16 hours felt short because it was so engaging.” One participant remarked, “It wasn’t a boring lecture. We got to share code and directly modify it, which was refreshing and very informative. It felt highly professional.” This program not only improved students’ practical skills but also bolstered their confidence in autonomous driving technologies, serving as a strong example of how to train talent ready for immediate deployment in the field.

Keimyung University plans to continue expanding practical education in robotics and autonomous driving, aiming to discover and nurture regional talent who will lead in the era of advanced technology.
