2023 Chuncheon AI Convergence Competition Event Outsourcing

In an effort to nurture future AI talent in Chuncheon, the 2023 Chuncheon AWS DeepRacer Championship was successfully held on September 17.

The main event took place that day at Commons Field Chuncheon, attended by Mayor Yuk Dong-han of Chuncheon City; Kang Sang-baek, Head of AWS Public Sector; Provincial Assembly Member Jung Jae-woong; and City Council Members Kwon Hee-young and Na Yu-gyeong, among others. As the first competition of its kind hosted by a local government in Korea, it was sponsored by AWS, the world’s largest cloud service provider. The core challenge is to load autonomous driving algorithms onto DeepRacer, an AI-based self-driving race car developed by AWS, and drive the track in the shortest possible time with precise navigation. Notably, this year’s competition featured a system using Object Detection, a key AI vision technology, to automatically detect cars leaving the track or crossing the starting line, thereby reducing the need for human intervention and enhancing the accuracy of time measurements.

Sixty teams from across the country competed in the online preliminary round, with six top-performing teams—Speeders, DanDanMukJik, Family, HoHoHeeHee, SeongGwangGuk, and WooOJo—advancing to the final. Team DanDanMukJik claimed first place, while Team HoHoHeeHee took second, and Team Family finished third. The first-place winners received a prize of 2.5 million won and the Mayor’s Award, along with an opportunity to attend AWS re:Invent 2023, the world’s largest cloud event, taking place in Las Vegas later this year.

Mayor Yuk Dong-han emphasized, “Advanced knowledge industries are built by local communities and their youth. I hope the DeepRacer competition becomes a signature event for Chuncheon and a driving force to transform our city.” Kang Sang-baek, Head of AWS Public Sector, also commented, “I hope Chuncheon becomes the AWS hub of Asia.”
